When an infant is born with normal appearance, it is not uncommon for a hidden genetic disorder to destroy their normal life later. My greatest passion is to offer Newborn screening to all the infants born in the Maritimes so that they would have a healthy start and live life fully.
My educational background includes a Master of Medical Doctorate from Tianjin Medical University and Nankai University combined (Eight-year program, P.R China), five year residency training in General Pathology at Dalhousie University (PGY3-5) and University of Saskatchewan (PGY1-2) in Canada, which leads to the certification from The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC). I then completed successfully a year of fellowship training in Medical Biochemistry including targeted fellowship training in Newborn Screening (Ontario, Canada) and Biochemical Genetics Diagnosis (BCG laboratory in Hamilton, Canada). I currently practice as a General Pathologist in the IWK Health Centre as Division Head of Clinical Biochemistry and Maritime Newborn Screening Program. Teaching is also part of my job since IWK Health centre is academically associated with Dalhousie University and IWK is the biggest tertiary Pediatric hospital in Maritimes. I am very much enjoying a life as a leader in the Maritime Newborn Screening program and learning all the aspects of Mass Spectrometry and Medical Genetics. As a consulting Pathologist/Lab physician, interpretation and reporting test results for Inherited Metabolic Disorders is my routine everyday life.
The session covers several high yield topics in medical biochemistry. The target audience would be general pathology residents who are through the biochemistry rotations and prior writing the Royal college exams. The session will be of value to all pathology residents or practicing pathologists who are setting their career goal as a general laboratory physician or medical laboratory director in community hospitals in the future.
