    Dr. Pierre-Olivier Fiset

    Pierre-Olivier Fiset MDCM, PhD, FRCPC is an Anatomical Pathologist practicing at the McGill University Health Centre Glen site since 2016. He completed his PhD under the supervision of Dr Qutayba Hamid at the Meakins-Christie Institute. He is a medical graduate from McGill University (2010) and completed his residency in Anatomical Pathology (2015) also at McGill University. He completed his fellowship in Thoracic Pathology (2016) in the University of Toronto Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology program under the supervision of Dr David Hwang and Dr Ming-Sound Tsao. His practice consists of Thoracic Pathology, Gastrointestinal Pathology, Medical Renal Pathology and Biomarker and Molecular Pathology. He participates in numerous research endeavors and has acted as an expert consultant in each of these respective fields.

Medical renal pathology is a subspecialty pathology that makes diagnoses of non-neoplastic diseases that affect renal function. At the end of the session, participants will be able to assess a renal biopsy for adequacy and plan the division of the renal biopsy for ancillary tests (ie. light microscopy, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy). Participants will be able to recognize critical value pathology that needs to be reported to the clinician as soon as possible. Participants will also be able to distinguish and diagnose common medical kidney diseases based on renal biopsy findings.

At the end of the sessions, participants will be able to: 

  • Assess basic renal histology, Distinguish features of common medical kidney diseases
  • Plan kidney biopsy tissue division for ancillary testing, Diagnose critical values in medical renal pathology
